Yeah...I'm Addicted to Slugs

Does anyone know anything about this song? Actual name, producer, original sample...anything? I first heard it on DJ Supreme and DJ Lil' Raskal's Summer Pimpin' 3, which came out in late '06. Other than that, I don't know much. If you do know something about the track, please share. Anyway, I think it's a great song and it's definitely one of my favorite Game tracks, so you should download it.

Addicted- Game

His Turntables Might Wobble

I've always been a big fan of DJ Quest. He has a distinct style and I'll never forget my first time watching his performance on the Tableturns Anniversary VHS that I owned in high school. He put out an album in '01 that was a bit like a career retrospective.

It showcased various works from his years in the game and had a big influence on me as a young DJ.

My two favorite cuts were "Shout (Hip Hop Mix)" and "Way Back-N-Da Mix". "Shout (Hip Hop Mix)" featured Quest destroying a Tears for Fears classic over The Almighty RSO's "One In The Chamba".

When I was still in high school and under the delusion that I was going to become a famous battle DJ, I used to spend hours at my tables trying to emulate Quest's scratches. The thing that baffles me is that both songs were apparently recorded in the early 90's ('94 and '93 respectively). Talk about being ahead of your time.

Shout (Hip Hop Mix)- DJ Quest

"Way Back-N-Da Mix" is a good ol' fashioned mega-mix that Quest constructed with crew mate DJ Cue. It's got everything: rap standards, lessen known cuts, insane scratching; all blended together seamlessly. Remember, this was made looong before the laptop era of DJing. You can tell this track was a labor of love. Every single transition, blend, and scratch is perfectly executed, making for a lot of rewindable moments.

This Ones For All The Past Times I Dug

Most people recognize the group Delinquent Habits for their Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass sampled hit "Tres Delinquentes"

That single is near and dear to me for many reasons, one being that it is among the first records I ever bought. Ahh, I remember it like it was...shit, that was 10 years ago. Now that I think about it, the song dropped in '96, three years before I bought the vinyl 12". Man how time flies. Anyway, it's a great song with a lot of creative sampling throughout.

While I have nothing but love for "Tres Delinquentes", it often causes listeners to overlook the rest of Delinquent Habits' self titled debut. Maybe it's not a masterpiece, but I consider this album to be somewhat of a hidden gem. While OG Style (the group's producer and DJ) created some complete duds, like "When the Stakes are High", he does have some moments of brilliance. From his sample selection to his subtle yet funky cuts, he showed a lot promise on this album.

As a compliment to the music, I love the album artwork. Rap music is famous (or should I say infamous?) for remaking classic album covers. This is a brilliant example of such covers as the three Delinquents pay homage to one of my all-time favorite films, The Warriors.

Today I'm going highlight my favorite track on the album, "Good Times". I consider this track one of the better nostalgic rap tracks out there. While Ives and Kemo (the groups' two MCs) both give solid lyrical performances, the real winner here is the beat. This is OG Styles' shining moment on the album as he laces listeners with an effectively haunting loop of "Lay Lady Lay" by the Byrds.

I'm hoping this post will spark some conversation on my blog. Please post your thoughts and feelings about this joint or anything else on the site. It takes two seconds and makes me feel like there's a purpose for all of my hard work.
